Okada Masaki as ‘Hamlet’ (2019), directed by Simon Godwin

Image
Yep, I used the REAL promotional poster as the background! ( source ) Year 2019 is going to be a very busy year for Okada Masaki, at least theatre-wise. Earlier in July this year, we learned that he is going to portray Terrence Lavery in the thriller/horror theatrical production of ‘Bracken Moor’. The production will be performed in Bunkamura Tokyo from 14 August 2019, thus Masaki will celebrate his 30th birthday on stage (his birthday is on 15 August). Then last week, we learned that Masaki is adding another theatre production to his 2019 agenda. This time, the play is one of Shakespeare’s most famous plays, ‘Hamlet’. More significantly, the director is Brits  Simon Godwin , the Artistic Director of the US-based Shakespeare Theatre Company. I am not sure how many Shakespearean dramas performed by all-Japanese cast were directed by a Shakespearean director, but Simon Godwin is certainly seen as a prominent figure in the Shakespeare world. His recent work on Anthony and Cleopatra

Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū Ep 3 recap

Miyokichi (Omasa Aya) helped applying Kikuhiko's (Okada Masaki) make up It’s not a smooth streaming tonight AT ALL, which is annoying because it’s THE Miyo-Kiku episode! On the plus side, I have a lot of Miyo-Kiku screen shots! (now I've watched the uploaded ver in Pandora, hence I can piece the story better) Kiku n Hatsutaro now lived outside Master Yakumo’s house. Kiku worked at a restaurant at daylight but he also did Rakugo at night. Hatsutaro was the star, but Kiku was far from being jealous. If anything, he was more of rather disheartened by his own lack of progress.

Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū Ep 2 recap

Kikuhiko and Hatsutaro (I think Kiku was sending Hatsu off to war) I just finished watching Ep 2 on live-stream. It was very good! The timid, young Kikuhiko is a STARK contrast to the old, rather cynical old Yakumo. Yamasaki Ikusaburo made a delightful entrance as Hatsutaro, while we got a glimpse of Miyokichi at the end of the (seemingly short) episode. Ep 2 started with the young Kikuhiko joining the 7th Yakumo’s household in 1936. Hatsutaro aka Sukeroku welcomed Kiku rather warmly n said he (Suke) would be the aniki from now on. Young Kiku had the old 8th gen Yakumo’s quiet personality while Suke was a chatterbox since the beginning. I think Kiku’s parents died when he was very young.

Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū Episode 1 recap

It started!!! I’ve just finished watching Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū live!!! Thank you, Universe! The episode started with Yakumo dreaming while he was driven by his driver and butler Matsuda-san to a theatre for a Rakugo performance. The dream was about Sukeroku and Miyokichi; he as a young Kikuhiko was talking to the latter, but someone killed her. Kiku suddenly looked back and saw a child falling down the stairs. The episode started with Yakumo having a dream of his past After the show, Yotaro came to see the old man Yakumo. After a begging session, Yota was invited into Yakumo’s car. Matsuda-san was the family driver and butler. Like Alfred Pennyworth.
