The first Gekidan Theatre online performance

Image
Gekidan Year One , where I got a glimpse of Masaki's life at home... Haven’t been updating this blog this year because… well, COVID-19 happens. So, as with many of us during this insane COVID-19 lockdown time, I had to go into lockdown. In Japan, Okada Masaki also has to do the same thing. I’ve been wondering, honestly, how he fares in this crazy time. Does he abide to the social distancing rule? Does he stay at home? So, when Masaki banded with three Japanese actors to form an online theatre group, I was so excited. Joining Emoto Tokio, Ochiai Motoki and Kaku Kento, Masaki explored the current daily world during lockdown. Their first show was uploaded to YouTube yesterday (available until 21 May – so watch it now!) and was directed by Katō Takuya.

WOWOW Hamlet celebration interview

Image
Kuroki Haru (Ophelia) and Okada Masaki (Hamlet) promoting the WOWOW broadcast for 31 August Pardon my absence for the last few months; my real life prevented me from doing anything Masaki-related (translation とか, making a new MV とか…). But in late September, Wisteria-san sent me her transcription of an interview that Okada Masaki and Kuroki Haru made for the Hamlet WOWOW broadcast, and I really like that interview. Hence, here’s my translation of that interview transcript. Wisteria-san was actually more than capable of translating their interview into English herself, but I specifically asked her to send me her transcription in Kanji and kana, so that I can practice my Japanese. Hence, any mistakes in this translation is entirely mine, except for some parts where I’ve asked Wisteria-san for help, for those parts proved to be too difficult for me to understand. While I understand that most overseas fans have not seen Haml

‘Hamlet’ is a work that will remain in my memory

I have translated the interview of WOWOW for "Hamlet", uploaded on 29 August 2019. Thanks to Wisteria-san for the translation consultation… Okada Masaki as Hamlet (photo by WOWOW) Okada Masaki: ‘Hamlet’ is a work that will remain in my memory 2019/08/29 11:00  WOWOW On 31 August 2019 (from 9 pm), WOWOW will broadcast “Hamlet”, a stage play where Okada Masaki garnered attention for challenging the difficult role of Hamlet in Shakespeare’s masterpiece.  So far, Okada had taken his first plunge on stage plays with Ninagawa Yukio’s “Total Eclipse” production and acquired more experience with the likes of “Go Go Boys, Go Go Heaven” and “Ningen Gowasan”. Captured in the same fantasy, I watched the enthusiastic performance of the protagonist Hamlet’s revenge and madness. This time, I interviewed Okada while the performance was still on-going. Q: As your first Shakespeare work, how did you feel when you received the offer to do the role of Hamlet? I was v

More Hamlet observations from WOWOW

Image
Kuroki Haru (Ophelia) and Okada Masaki (Hamlet) reminding viewers that it was only one day before the recorded Hamlet aired at WOWOW  This is my observation while re-watching Simon Godwin’s Hamlet recorded on 22 May 2019 in Bunkamura Shibuya Toky o. WOWOW aired the recording on Saturday, 31 August 2019. Special thanks to my dear friends for providing me with the recording.  It was like finding love again. As soon as I heard the opening music, I remembered once again why I fell in love with this production. It was hiraeth all over again… WOWOW videographer team and editing team definitely did a great job piecing the scenes on this show (they did a good job as well with Ningen Gowasan, by the way). It evoked that hiraeth feeling, the desire to go back to that moment in time, but of course it cannot be… Yet, the recording still gives me the magic and brings me back my love to Hamlet, in addition to giving me more details that I have missed because I was too far away from the st

An MV for Okada Masaki’s 30th birthday

Image
I understand it might be considered late to make an MV to celebrate Okada Masaki’s 30th birthday, and I have made two posts already in relation to his birthday (one is about the Bracken Moor review and the other is about my recollection on being there for his birthday – though he doesn’t know I was there). But, one only has one chance of being 30, and since this is Masaki, I thought it’s better late than never. Hence this MV. It’s using one of my most favourite Japanese songs Hanamizuki, sung beautifully by Taiwanese-Japanese Yō Hitoto (who also penned the lyrics). Music by Mashiko Tatsurō and piano by Takebe Satoshi. I sourced the music from this YouTube video and I modified the translation also based on that video. I actually heard this song again after years of absence when I was having dinner with Benio-san after watching the soiree during Masaki's birthday, hence the nostalgia. I’d like to acknowledge the many pho

Curtain call courtesy (カーテンコールの作法について)

Image
The Hamlet 2019 stage in Bunkamura Shibuya Tokyo (source: Nagashima Keizō ), because I don't have a photo of the Bracken Moor stage... In the light of the minimum curtain calls I witnessed during the Bracken Moor soiree on 16 August 2019, I wrote this curtain call courtesy. The English version is after the Japanese version. My gratitude to Wisteria-san for translating the English version to Japanese.

The July 2019 Entertainment Station interview for Bracken Moor

Okada Masaki by Tomita Nozomi ( Entertainment Station ) I finally finished translating a July 2019 interview of Okada Masaki for the Bracken Moor stage play. The interview is rather long, thus I'm very happy I finished translating it. Enjoy! Okada Masaki’s new theatre frontier “Bracken Moor: the Ghost of the Wasteland”. As his love for the beloved theatre continues, what is his acting path from here on? 3 July 2019 Entertainment Station Wednesday, 14 August is the Japanese premiere of the suspense drama “Bracken Moor - The Ghost of the Wasteland” (hereafter “Bracken Moor”), written by the British playwright Alexi Kay Campbell, the winner of the Laurence Olivier Award. A recollection of Okada Masaki’s 30th birthday

Image
Okada Masaki in front of birthday wishes from his fans (source:  Toho Stage ). Mine is circled with two hearts... I’m back in my home in Australia now, but I still carry Tokyo within my heart. Specifically, I still carry Ginza in my heart. The Ginza where Okada Masaki celebrated his 30th birthday with us, his fans. Thus, this post, a reminiscence, if you will, of the beautiful day and night where we celebrated Masaki’s birthday with him. I still remember that night; a humid clear sky with strong wind. Just like tonight, the moon was very visible that night, patiently accompanying us as we fans lined up outside the Theatre Creation back stage door to see Okada Masaki. To wish him happy birthday. I didn’t realise until later, but it was full moon during Masaki’s birthday. A beautiful full moon that I was so lucky to witness in the midst of Tokyo, of all cities. The moon was still there, smiling, as Masaki came out of the stage door after we waited for almost 40 min or so. E
